Schalke and Hamburg shared the points in a 3-3 thriller on Sunday as more new signings grabbed the headlines on a good weekend for debutants in Germany.

Schalke new boy Adam Szalai scored the Royal Blues’ crucial third goal to secure a share of the points, while Shinji Okazaki also scored on his winning debut for Mainz against his former side Stuttgart.

Schalke took the lead when Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar struck within 90 seconds before compatriot Rafael van der Vaart converted a penalty to level for the guests.

Forward Maximilian Beister produced a bullet header to put Hamburg in front before Huntelaar levelled right at the end of the first half, meaning it was equal at the break.

Lasse Sobiech then headed the hosts in front just after half-time before Hungary’s Szalai, who joined Schalke from Mainz in the summer, pounced on a mistake by Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler on 72 minutes to share the points.

Mainz new boy Okazaki scored in his side’s 3-2 win over his former side VfB Stuttgart, who he left last month. Mainz picked up the three points after Germany midfielder Nicolai Muller netted goals either side of Okazaki’s 65th-minute strike.

Muller scored his first after 14 minutes, but Bosnia striker Vedad Ibisevic levelled just two minutes later for Stuttgart.

Okazaki, who joined Mainz after two years at Stuttgart, slotted home his team’s second after he converted a Zdenek Pospech cross before Muller made it 3-1. Stuttgart’s Martin Harnik scored to give his side hope, but hosts Mainz hung on.
